band-aid on a bullet wound

According to NPR this morning, Karen Hughes is in the Middle East, trying once again to put a positive spin on the image of the United States. Listening to this really pissed me off. PR is not what the United States needs right now. Using advertising techniques and looking for target audiences is not going to help us. The damage has already been done, the scars run deeply. Parts of our target audiences are the ones calling jihad on America and blowing up the tube in London, and I seriously doubt they could give a rat’s whether or not Karen Hughes is in Egypt trying to make us look pretty.

I met Karen Hughes my senior year in college when I went on a trip to Washington D.C. with my department. She was one of the few top officials we still got to meet, since the city had been locked down tight for a month. I left Dallas on October 11, 2001 and got back home the day after anthrax had been discovered in Tom Daschle’s mail. It was a different city than I imagine it had ever been before, and I have to say it was utterly fascinating to be there. We spoke with Karen Hughes during a lull in her extremely busy schedule–you can imagine what the President’s top communications official was going through in the weeks after 9/11. Even then, I was not fooled by the slick, pretty PR exterior of the “campaign” that was going on to boost the opinions of America in the Middle East. The meeting with Karen Hughes left a bad taste in my mouth, and part of my drive to move up to DC and work there as a press secretary or lobbyist was fueled by the fact that I just didn’t buy what they were trying to sell the rest of the world.

Now, don’t get me wrong–I want nothing more than for the Middle East, as well as everywhere else, to have a good opinion of America. But they won’t have a good opinion of America until we change our foreign policy, and frankly I don’t blame them. I am not a very big fan of our foreign policy, either. I am also not a big fan of our policies at home. The United States is so concerned about matters abroad that when we have a devastating natural disaster, it turns into a giant clusterfuck. The hierarchies of power are skewed and nobody really knows who is in charge. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, and *nobody* knows what W is up to. There are people going hungry on American streets every day, children not getting the kind of education they deserve, and now there are entire cities that don’t exist anymore and homes that have been washed away in a matter of minutes. No matter what our foreign policies are, how could other countries respect any of our actions abroad if we can’t even take care of our own people at home?

A shiny PR veneer isn’t going to fix anything. Sending advertising campaigns and slick “Yay Team USA” infomercials aren’t going to change anyone’s mind. It’s putting a band-aid on a bullet wound, and it’s not going to be enough until the government makes a real change. So…maybe 2008?

relief efforts

The Oxygen Network is donating $1 for each person that signs up for this campaign to help the patients from the New Orleans Children’s Hospital that have been moved to the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. This costs you absolutely nothing but one minute of your time and donates $1 to a great cause. I urge everyone reading this to get out and help in any way you can to further the relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims. Volunteer to sort donations, answer phones, give a little money if you can, donate some food or bottled water or outgrown clothing. Just do something. It’s easy to think that you don’t have time, or resources, because I’ve been thinking about both. I don’t have a lot of extra money, and I guard my time as precious, but I can’t sit by idly and cry over a tragedy that I’m unwilling to help out with. I hope you all join me in doing whatever you’re able to help these people, because I pray there are people out there who would be willing to do the same for me.

P. Diddy’s gonna be busy

While I am excited that this election had a huge turnout, and kind of bummed that due to the large number of non-18-to-29-year-old voters the young voter percentages were screwed, I am STILL mad that young people refuse to take a stand. I am so sick of hearing the following excuses:

1.) “I wasn’t registered!”
You knew when the election was and you had plenty of time to get off your lazy ass and do something about it.

2.) “I didn’t know who to vote for!”
GOD! This is the worst one. In a day and age when information is available AT OUR FINGERTIPS, there is absolutely no excuse in the entire world that you couldn’t have perused the party platforms and made a decision for what you believe in.

3.) “My vote wouldn’t have counted anyway!”
My answer here is twofold:
a.) HAVE SOME PRIDE! This is your country, take ownership of it! If you are that unwilling to do your civic duty, then you lose your right to bitch if things don’t go the way you want them to.
b.) In some states, every VOTE counts. Look at Ohio–if things had gotten any closer, one vote could have tipped the scales. Look at the 2000 election. Look at the world outside when you remove head from ass, then vote.

At this point, it’s useless to argue about coulda, shoulda, and woulda…but if we’re going to live with Monkey McSneerFacePants for the next 4 years, I hope he uses this opportunity to really live up to what he said about uniting the country. The partisan lines are killing us. There are a lot of asshole dems and a lot of asshole republicans who are making it us a nation divided–there IS such a thing as too conservative and there IS such a thing as too liberal. If there is going to be less partisan power struggle, more giving a flying fuck about America, it has to start with the Big Cheese. I would hate to see the pretty speech from tonight be only so much lip service, as I fear it might be.

My mother was so concerned about my relationship with Michael Moore. She’ll be pleased to know that we’ve broken up and are currently seeing other people. GOD…I may be liberal, but he still makes my head want to explode. Anything that he has to say loses total credibility with the way he says it. He is every PR person’s worst nightmare. I did like his Open Letter to Voters that he had this week, but most of the time I wish he’d take it down a notch or five.

In other news, in Mississippi you can now only marry a sibling of the opposite sex, rather than the same sex. Sad news for inbreeders everywhere. But I’m pro-gay marriage and a Texas hippie democrat (when a customer today said that everyone in TX was thrilled over the results, and I said not everyone, he told me I didn’t SOUND like a hippie. Figure A on ignorance, step right up!!), so what do I know?

EDIT: My friend Matt says I’m a hipSTER and not a hippie. So there, scary East Texas guy!

Young adult empowerment gives me warm fuzzies!

It is so wonderful and heartwarming to see so many people in my age bracket hyped up and excited to vote. Young voters get ignored by the pollsters because they are typically lazy and DON’T go vote. I hope this is the year we take them by surprise.

I know I’m harping about it, but if you are reading this, and you are registered, and you haven’t done it yet, you must must must must go vote TODAY! If you are in the line before the polls close, YOU ARE LEGALLY ENTITLED TO VOTE even if it takes all night. If you don’t vote, you lose the right to bitch. Just think of it that way.

If you don’t know where to go tonight, visit My Polling Place to find your polling location as well as the type of voting technology they are using.

Also, be sure to double and triple check your vote! There were problems with electronic voting machines when you choose straight party ticket voting–it has supposedly been fixed, but voter beware. If you make a mistake on your ballot, ask for another one. If you get challenged by someone, stand up for your right to vote. They are legally entitled to challenge you, but they have to do it in a procedural manner. YOU are legally entitled to your vote. There are people at your polling place to assist you. If someone tries to block you from getting in, say “I want to vote!” as loud as you can, and someone will come to your aid.

Best of all, if you vote, I promise I’ll blog about something else tomorrow.

Take your intolerance and SHOVE IT.

Nothing makes me more angry than people who are not tolerant of another person’s right to have an opinion, right to make a choice, right to keep their own beliefs close to them, right to not have to argue about it. Nobody pushes this envelope more than my mother.

Granted, everyone’s mother is like that to a certain degree with their kids, I am sure. Mothers are like that–they don’t want their kids to make bad choices and have bad lives. I can respect that. But I am a grown woman and I am perfectly well-informed enough to make my own decisions about a lot of things in my life, and that includes my choice of presidential candidates. And my mother is a grown woman who is completely and totally intolerant of the fact that I have any kind of opinion that differs from hers, because she is the dictator of Bizarroland and she is ALWAYS RIGHT. Even if I tried to explain my reasons for my beliefs, she wouldn’t hear a word I said because she’d be too busy telling me I was wrong.

Last night we were having a perfectly fine phone conversation about my cat (who had to go to the vet last night, but is fine) and then she segued into today’s election. She told me to make sure I went and voted for The Traitor today. I told her we weren’t going to talk about politics. She continued to push at me, and I continued to cut her off. I finally told her that I didn’t call to tell her that I thought she should make sure to vote for the War Mongering Moron today and that I don’t want to talk about politics with her EVER. I continually request that she does not discuss anything political, religious, or racial with me for a number of reasons. She continually pushes the envelope and cannot shut her mouth about it. I gave her a couple warnings and told her that every time she opened her mouth, I was putting my cell phone in my lap. She kept on going, so I just hung up. It infuriated me for the rest of the evening.

My sister and I have completely opposing party stances when it comes to politics. But she doesn’t preach at me. She doesn’t call me up and tell me I’m stupid. She doesn’t come post comments on my blog about who I should vote for. I should mention that this is largely in part to the fact that my sister is not evil and/or crazy, a fact for which I am eternally thankful.

Seriously, screw both candidates. I vote Jon Stewart for President!

Anyway, let’s wrap this up with yet another Public Service Announcement:

I learned it from watching you, all right? I learned it by watching you!
Parents who are intolerant and argumentative have children who think they’re crazy.

No, really…go vote today, people. Make your voice heard. EVERY VOTE COUNTS! Don’t give me that bullshit about your vote being cancelled out by somebody else’s vote, or any crap about how the election’s already sewn up one way or another and it won’t matter anyway. If you never speak up then you’ll never get your chance to be heard! Whoever you vote for, JUST VOTE!!!

Vote early, vote often, make your voice heard. I don’t care who you vote for as long as you VOTE. Well, that’s not 100% true but you get the sentiment, right?

I hope I manage not to bore myself to death today. Work has been a bit slow this week. I did something scary and sent my resume to our big boss when he told us about this new media production company he’s started with our old production guy for all our events. They’re not hiring until after the first of the year, because that’s when the space will be finished (full-on studio!), but he seemed interested in my resume and I told him I just wanted to make my interest known right away. Here’s hoping something good comes of it!!

I managed to remember my 40’s hairstyling skillz so I can do my friend’s hair for Halloween. I was quite proud of how it looked after our trial run last night. It was a very girly night–hairstyling followed by shopping. :)

One of our servers just went down, so it’s back to work for me. *sigh*

Rock the vote, people. And if you can’t rock it, at least give it the old adult top 40 try!

Yeah, I was on a brief hiatus. I’m back now. Let there be much rejoicing.

Today marks the start of early voting in Texas. You don’t need special circumstances to vote early, all you need is your voter registration card. Get your vote out of the way before November! I can’t stress enough how important it is for the younger generations to vote. If you don’t vote, your voice doesn’t count. This is the only way to make yourself heard!

If you don’t do your part to help change the country, nobody else is going to do it for you.

Click here for early voting dates and times for Dallas County. For other Texas counties/locations, click here.

(links yoinked from my own research, www.sheeshoo.com, and the many emails from my friend who can register people to vote)

Coming up next: My take on Team America: World Police, what’s new in my gadget bag, the joys of having money, and I’m going to see The Pixies tonight and you’re not.

It’s your country, take ownership of it!

Just a side note, I hope that everyone has registered to vote. If you haven’t, you can visit any of these sites (nonpartisan, even!):

  • Rock the Vote
  • Declare Yourself
  • Federal Election Commission
  • Election Impact from Democrats.org
  • Vote GOP 2004
  • And you can go here to get information about candidates (in your district as well as the presidential candidates) and their platforms.

Voting is so important I can’t stress it enough. Quit taking offense to things going on in this country, take ACTION. Vote and make your voice count.

    It just occurred to me..

If my parents ever read this, they would be horrified by my political stance, considering how incredibly conservative they are. We can’t talk about any important issues because it always ends up in a fight. My views are so radically different than theirs. I actually had to walk out the door and not come back due to a conversation about gay marriage and Democrats. My mother honestly believes that everyone of a Middle Eastern descent hates America and is only living in America to kill natural-born Americans. She is racist and stereotypes left and right and it drives me crazy. Thank goodness for free will and free thought. And thank goodness that kind of outlook on life is not genetic.
