For some reason, I get the MOST spam on a particular post of mine from almost a year ago. I was talking about how every iPod I’ve ever had has been heavy on the Bjork when I set it to shuffle all songs. I am not sure if the 8GB iPod nano I received for Christmas is a big Bjork fan or not, but I should load up some of her albums and find out. Either way, I disabled comments on that post and hopefully that will cut back on the 10+ spam comments that entry has been getting per day.
Every morning on my way to work, I set my iPod on shuffle and take note of the songs that it throws back at me. When it starts spitting out a good rotation, I try to keep it going as long as possible. I pause it when I get out of the car or stop listening on my headphones, and then pick right back up on the same shuffle rotation later. I deem a rotation “good” when I rarely have to skip past a song that doesn’t fit my mood or the mood of the shuffle mix I’ve been enjoying. The rotation it is on now is EXCELLENT, at least to me. I haven’t had to go back in the iPod menu and hit “Shuffle Songs” in two weeks.
- Divorce Song - Liz Phair
- Mountain - PJ Harvey
- Spiralling - Antony and the Johnsons
- Turn Into - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
- Nobody’s Crying - Patty Griffin
- Checkout Time in Vegas - Drive-By Truckers
- King of All Of The World - Old 97’s
- Hangin’ Around - Counting Crows
Let’s hope the iPod can continue to keep the streak alive!

I’m looking forward to the three day week we have for Thanksgiving. The past couple of weeks have been killer and I kind of ended up hibernating this weekend, really only seeing my family despite having made plans to go to a concert and also possibly hang out with friends. I fell asleep early Saturday afternoon watching football and then didn’t wake up until well into the evening. I guess I needed the sleep.
I need to write roughly 4500 words a day if I’m going to catch up on my National Novel Writing Month project, because I didn’t work on a word of it this weekend. I think I’ll try to catch up this weekend while my husband is off making sweet coffee drinks for the unwashed masses. I’m glad we’ll have plenty of scratch to buy Christmas presents, but I don’t think either one of us want him to ever do the second job thing again. It’ll be hard to give up the free pumpkin cream cheese muffins, though.

Shawn and I had a conversation on Friday about how Modest Mouse is overrated–still better than half the crap on MTV, and not BAD, but overrated just the same. So, of course my iPod would bust out with a Modest Mouse song. I had hoped the new album would be back up to The Moon & Antarctica levels, but I was sad to find it wasn’t true. I keep it on the iPod hoping it will grow on me. No luck so far. Perhaps it’s time to make some room.
The New Pornographers - All The Old Showstoppers
Modest Mouse - Florida
Spoon - Eddie’s Ragga
Tapes ‘n Tapes - Cowbell
Rilo Kiley - Silver Lining
Tegan & Sara - Are You Ten Years Ago
Ben Gibbard/Ben Barnett - Joga (Bjork cover)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
Hope you all had a good weekend!

Every iPod I’ve ever owned has loved Bjork something fierce. My nano spits out a Bjork song almost every morning on the way to work. I’ve also noticed that it loves Lily Allen, Ryan Adams, Rufus Wainwright, and now A Fine Frenzy (the latest album I have loaded on it) when it is on “Shuffle Songs.”
Graham Coxon - Freakin’ Out
Cat Power - Islands
Bjork - Wanderlust
Ryan Adams - Firecracker
A Fine Frenzy - The Minnow and The Trout
The Pipettes - It Hurts to See You Dance So Well
Beck - The Horrible Fanfare-Landslide

My iPod was feeling pretty mellow this morning, probably because it’s Monday, and nobody ever moves as fast as they do any other morning on a Monday.
A Fine Frenzy - Think of You
Tegan & Sara vs. Mylo - Walking With A Ghost In Paris
Bjork - Vertebrae By Vertebrae
Patty Griffin - Someone Else’s Tomorrow
Ryan Adams - Enemy Fire
The New Pornographers - The Laws Have Changed
Rilo Kiley - Ripchord
Zombies - This Will Be Our Year
Wilco - What Light
I listened to this while driving down the highway behind someone with the vanity plates RON DON People are weird.

My iPod must have noticed my black, black mood this morning and the general restlessness I’m feeling this week. This morning on my ride to work, it commiserated with me:
Wilco - Hate It Here
Tegan and Sara - Hop a Plane
Matthew Sweet - Lost My Mind
Feist - One Evening
Farstar - Never Been to New York
Muse - Supermassive Black Hole
The Cure - Lullaby
Arcade Fire - Keep the Car Running
This is what I listened to when driving with gritted teeth behind the slowest drivers in Dallas Fort-Worth. When will teleporting be ready?!

Ever since my 20GB iPod bit the dust (so sad, so sad) I have had to make do with the 4GB nano that I purchased to replace it. I couldn’t afford a big iPod at the time and I was really intrigued by how small the nano is. I still really love it, actually, and find it to sometimes be a lot easier to carry around and use than the bigger one. Definitely better for running and the gym! But anyway, I digress. The only bad thing about the nano is the fact that it’s only 4GB and that doesn’t always hold all the music I’d like it to.
So, I’ve had to be diligent about pulling off stuff I haven’t listened to lately or am sick of so that I can load other stuff on. I know lots of people manage their shuffles and nanos (and hell, even big people iPods) with fancy things like smart playlists and all that, but I’m FAR too picky about what I want to listen to at any given moment.
Things I (re)loaded tonight:
- The entire Rilo Kiley catalog, as I am way excited about the new album release next week!!
- The entire Rufus Wainwright catalog, because seeing him on Friday night reminded me how much I love his music.
- The new Tegan and Sara
- The old Feist album (to go with the new one)
- Ryan Adams (in the mood for some alt-country)
- The Knife (for some reason, I really like writing to this album)
I always love loading music on my iPod because I get so excited about having new stuff to listen to, even if I’ve heard it a million times. I’ll have to make room next week for the new Rilo Kiley and the new New Pornographers albums. I can’t wait. I have a gift certificate to Good Records burning a hole in my desk drawer.
What are you listening to right now?

The new Wilco (due out May 15) sounds absolutely great from what I heard on the Spring Music Preview of NPR’s “All Songs Considered” show. I cannot wait to get it. There are a few others I want to pick up:
- The new Shins album (out already) - I love love love the single.
- The new Patty Griffin album (out already) - She’s my hero, so of course I have to have it.
- The new Modest Mouse album (out this week) - They are playing the first single to death even though I really like it. The other track I heard previewed sounded very melodic…I like it.
- The new Bright Eyes (out in April) - the track I heard sounds REALLY good.
- The new Tori Amos (out in May) - I’m a long-time Tori fan, so I will definitely be picking this up.
Playing now on the iPod:
- Lily Allen
- Silversun Pickups
- “Wicked” Original Broadway Cast soundtrack
- Some old Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine that Shawn ripped to the iBook
- Podcasts for nerd stuff like Firefly, Buffy and Battlestar Galactica
Shawn is really putting his iPod to work now that he has a computer available to him that runs iTunes, and it’s spurring me to do more with mine. I am still loving my nano, even though I want my bigger iPod to be fixed (or replaced with an iPod video!!). It’s so pocketable and usable to me…not that the bigger one wasn’t, but I could really stick the nano in my pocket if I wanted to.
It’s amazing how small and compact my tech toys have gotten. These days I only really need 2 things…I’m rolling with a Pocket PC phone (thank you Gear Diary!) and a 4GB nano. I really could fit all my gadgetry in my smallest purse now.
I’m thinking of changing up the format of this blog…I may have to play with Wordpress and/or Tumblr the next time I have some free time.

This is what the iPod spit out on my way to my last day on the job. Let’s see if we can glean any hidden meaning from any of the songs.
Kelis - Milkshake (DJ Zinc Remix)*
Interpol - Say Hello to the Angels
Bloc Party - Helicopter
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power’s Out)**
Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone (Jason Nevins Radio Edit)***
*It seems my iPod was a big fan of one of my favorite workout CDs, Superstars #1 Hits Remixed. I might be kind of a music snob by day, but for workouts I love cheesy pop music with a driven beat. Both this song and the Kelly Clarkson remix are on this album. This morning I was in an upbeat mood, so the Kelis track was actually a good choice. Plus, I’m in kind of a “Mean Girls” mood…I’ve got to go play hardball one last time, and I do NOT plan on taking anybody’s shit today. I could teach them, but I’d have to charge.
**This is eerily appropriate given the conversation I had with Shannon a few weekends ago about the lyrics of this Arcade Fire song. One part of a verse goes “I go out into the light, I go out to pick a fight with anyone” and Shannon thought it might be “I go out into the light, I go out to pick a fight with Canada”…he called me to see if it really said that or not. I gave it a listen, and I was actually disappointed that it WASN’T talking about picking a fight with Canada. At this job, I have had nothing but grief when dealing with Canada and FedEx International. So, hearing this song this morning made me smile. Thanks, Shannon!
***When DON’T I love Kelly Clarkson? She’s my guilty pop pleasure even when I’m NOT working out, and I’m not afraid to admit it. However, this song really hit home for me today given something that happened yesterday. Realizing the depth of your own personal growth is good. My life rules.
Other good things about today: Did I mention it’s my last day on the job? It’s also payday. It’s also Friday. AND I get to see Serenity tonight with my friends. Hooray! Nobody can take the sky from me today.
