music soothes the savage writer

iPod nanoIt’s been hard lately, folks. I’ve had a lot going on, but I won’t bore you with the details. Suffice it to say, the home office is coming along, I’ve got to have a long talk with my doctor about how not having headaches every day may not be worth the price of drug-induced nail-biting anxiety, and the fact that I write and manage projects for a living always has to take precedence over my own writing.

Today I was in a horrible mood. I’m not really sure why; again, it could have been drug-induced moodiness (I find it unfair that a drug I take for chronic pain that is ANTI-anxiety and PRO-calming could make me a cracked out freak) or just the fact that I wished I was working in the comfort of my apartment with my sweet kitties keeping me company. It could have been the fact that a bunch of someones flaked out on something important that I needed for a project. It could have been the fact that it was only Tuesday, and I want it to be Friday. But I was not just moody–I was flat out SURLY.

When I get in a mood like that in the office, I find it best to retreat behind the comfort of my High Fidelity-worthy giant headphones and block out the environment so that I can focus better. Today I fired up the My Neighbourhood radio station on my last.fm account, and suddenly I was more myself again.

I have been a last.fm user for the last three years, but I’d stopped using it awhile ago when a playlist got stuck playing on my laptop one long weekend and totally screwed up my play counts. I could have gone in manually and fixed it, but that was too much of a pain in the ass. So, recently I set it all back to zero and started fresh. I’ve been scrobbling the tunes I play on my iPod during my 30-45 minute commute each way, and I’ve rediscovered their radio stations.

One of the cool features on last.fm is the tagging feature–you can tag a song you’re listening to with anything that you like. When the song is playing, you can see what other people have tagged it with. I haven’t gone so far to tag all the songs in my played library yet, but I have started tagging songs that I like but do not have “toget” so that I can go back and remember who to search for in the iTunes Store or at Good Records.

Music has always been a balm to my soul–it sounds cheesy, but music is a big part of who I am, and it grounds me. My husband is the same way and it’s one of the biggest things we bonded about when we first started dating. Let’s put it this way–he always leaves the house with his iPod, but doesn’t always make it out of the house with his cell phone! (That will all change when we both get iPhone 2.0 in August, of course!) I know that as I get back to writing for myself again, iTunes and my iPod will be keeping me company.

In the meantime, check out my recently listened tracks in the sidebar of this blog, or click below to listen to My Neighbourhood radio. To see more about what I’m grooving to these days, you can visit my last.fm profile for some serious track stats.

What are you listening to these days?

monday morning mix: yeah, it’s really tuesday

I had a thoroughly enjoyable and tiring 3-day weekend, which was the capstone on a very hard, tiring week. I am glad to put that behind me and plan to keep forging ahead.  We did a lot of IKEA shopping, which turned into a lot of cleaning and putting together new furniture. We also did a lot of socializing–there was Indiana Jones, there was Mario Kart, there was cooking out on our new tiny charcoal grill, and there wasn’t much sleeping. I will admit I wasn’t looking forward to starting real life again, but I am glad to be one step closer to another weekend!

  1. Rilo Kiley - Smoke Detector
  2. St. Vincent - What Me Worry
  3. Kate Nash - Foundations
  4. Peter Bjorn and John - Let’s Call It Off
  5. Emma Pollock - This Rope’s Getting Tighter
  6. Goldfrapp - Some People
  7. PJ Harvey - Piano
  8. Nickel Creek - Scotch and Chocolate
  9. The Shins - Gone for Good
  10. Patty Griffin - Top of the World

Tonight there will be yet more socializing, as we’re having a friend over for dinner. I am hoping to also get a little cleaning and organizing done in our office (since it has all new awesome furniture!!) and do some writing to boot. I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!

monday morning mix: sounds like a sexy hamburger

I had a pretty uneventful weekend, really.  I let my mind rest from a week of hard blogging and writing and only managed to churn out 100 words last night.  It was nice to take a break from my own stuff, though I know I can’t do that every weekend or I’ll never get done!  I watched two movies (Knocked Up and Superbad), started a book (Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris), upgraded my eeePC to the newest release of Ubuntu, and my husband and I celebrated Mother’s Day (and his birthday!) with our families.  This next weekend probably won’t see much writing either, at least on Saturday.  We’re having a party to celebrate Shawn’s birthday and I’ll probably be getting the apartment party-ready all day long.

I did spend part of Friday downloading a bunch of new albums from eMusic, since I still had my 50 trial downloads plus 30 for the month.  I got quite a few things, including the new album from The Weepies, the much-lauded Bon Iver, and Frightened Rabbit on the recommendation of my friend Bill.  The iPod seems to be a big fan of the new Weepies stuff this morning!  It’s also been on quite the Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis kick.

  1. Counting Crows - Washington Square
  2. Ida - Blue Clouds
  3. The Weepies - Orbiting
  4. Rilo Kiley - The Absence of God
  5. Nickel Creek - This Side
  6. Feist - After thought
  7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Pin
  8. Frightened Rabbit - Backwards Walk
  9. Rilo Kiley - Accidental Deth
  10. The Weepies - Take So Long
  11. Romantica - I Need You Tonight
  12. Lisa Loeb - What Am I Supposed to Say?

In other news, I have passed the 2,000 Tweet mark on my Twitter account without even knowing it, which is a testament to how much I use the service.  If you haven’t joined Twitter, it’s a lot of fun.  The 140 character limit on Tweets (posts to the service) makes it kind of challenging to craft what you want to say.  It’s been an incredible way to network and find people of a like mind.  If you are already on Twitter, be sure to hop over to my profile and follow me!

morning mix: spammers still love bjork

BjorkFor some reason, I get the MOST spam on a particular post of mine from almost a year ago. I was talking about how every iPod I’ve ever had has been heavy on the Bjork when I set it to shuffle all songs. I am not sure if the 8GB iPod nano I received for Christmas is a big Bjork fan or not, but I should load up some of her albums and find out. Either way, I disabled comments on that post and hopefully that will cut back on the 10+ spam comments that entry has been getting per day.

Every morning on my way to work, I set my iPod on shuffle and take note of the songs that it throws back at me. When it starts spitting out a good rotation, I try to keep it going as long as possible. I pause it when I get out of the car or stop listening on my headphones, and then pick right back up on the same shuffle rotation later. I deem a rotation “good” when I rarely have to skip past a song that doesn’t fit my mood or the mood of the shuffle mix I’ve been enjoying. The rotation it is on now is EXCELLENT, at least to me. I haven’t had to go back in the iPod menu and hit “Shuffle Songs” in two weeks.

  1. Divorce Song - Liz Phair
  2. Mountain - PJ Harvey
  3. Spiralling - Antony and the Johnsons
  4. Turn Into - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  5. Nobody’s Crying - Patty Griffin
  6. Checkout Time in Vegas - Drive-By Truckers
  7. King of All Of The World - Old 97’s
  8. Hangin’ Around - Counting Crows

Let’s hope the iPod can continue to keep the streak alive!

Awesome Music Alert: Ronnie Fauss at Opening Bell, 4/5

My friend Ronnie is many things.  He’s incredibly funny, a great blogger, a good husband and father, and a wonderful musician.  I met Ronnie on my third date with Shawn, when he was playing a show at the now-defunct original Barley House.  I was incredibly nervous to meet some of Shawn’s friends, but I didn’t really need to worry.  The group made me feel at ease immediately (thanks el mol) and I connected with Ronnie over our mutual love of music.  We grew to be friends through the songwriting circle at church, and he truly encouraged me and inspired me as a musician.  I also met Evan through the songwriting circle, and I felt guilty even trying to make music in the same room as he was.  He is an amazing guitarist and songwriter.  I respect and admire both Ronnie and Evan a lot, and I don’t get to hear from either one of them as much as I would like to these days.

That’s why I’m really excited to go hear them play at Opening Bell this Saturday, April 5.  The show starts at 8 and promises to be a good time.  If you want to hear some great music, feel free to join me!  I’ll be the girl in the back cheering really loud…and I might be dressed up, since I’m coming straight from a dear friend’s wedding.  So be sure to tell me how pretty I look!

monday morning mix: $5000 a day for her pretty face

Supermodel - Juliana Hatfield Three
Just Say Yes - The Cure
Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
Doubting Thomas - Nickel Creek
Rhthm and Soul - Spoon
More Adventurous - Rilo Kiley
Almost Lover - A Fine Frenzy
Crying Over - Patty Griffin

I’m looking forward to the three day week we have for Thanksgiving.  The past couple of weeks have been killer and I kind of ended up hibernating this weekend, really only seeing my family despite having made plans to go to a concert and also possibly hang out with friends.  I fell asleep early Saturday afternoon watching football and then didn’t wake up until well into the evening.  I guess I needed the sleep.

I need to write roughly 4500 words a day if I’m going to catch up on my National Novel Writing Month project, because I didn’t work on a word of it this weekend.  I think I’ll try to catch up this weekend while my husband is off making sweet coffee drinks for the unwashed masses.  I’m glad we’ll have plenty of scratch to buy Christmas presents, but I don’t think either one of us want him to ever do the second job thing again.  It’ll be hard to give up the free pumpkin cream cheese muffins, though.

Happy Apple Event Day!

The day I’ve been waiting for is here! I can practically taste the new iPods in the air. Let’s see what Steve Jobs and his tight tight jeans have in store for us today:

- Ringtones in iTunes: 500,000 songs in the iTunes library are available to be made into ringtones for the price of 99 cents OVER the price of the song. You can buy a song for 99 cents, then pay the additional 99 cents to make it a ringtone. Why not just use the handy 3rd party software that does it for free? Still, a feature I’m sure many less-than-technically-inclined people will take advantage of. It’s cheaper than buying it from your cell provider, most of the time.

- ENTIRE IPOD LINE REVAMPED!!!!: Now that I’m done peeing myself, I’ll recap as Steve goes along (I have live.gizmodo.com auto-refreshing in another tab…)

  • New shuffles: Same look, different colors, and a red one for Product|RED supporting Africa. Still $79. Shawn will be upset…he wants the UT orange one! Maybe he can get it on clearance.
  • New nanos: People apparently want to watch video on the nano like on the “old” iPhone. Yes, it’s SO old. Ancient! It’s all metal, much wider than the original nano, but maybe not taller. Still thin. Still clickwheel. It looks kind of short and squat, with a 2″ (diagonal) screen, supporting the same resolution as the current iPod video. This has been the rumor going around, but I like the real thing more than the mockups I’ve seen. It will feature Coverflow and a new UI. Comes bundled with some free games, including Sudoku (awesome!). 24 hours of audio play, 5 hours of video play. Nice! 4GB silver version for $149, 8GB in all colors for $199, and it will work with the iPod+Nike kit. Not what I’m looking for in a new iPod, but I like it way more than I thought I would. Good job, Steveo.
  • New iPods: The old iPod is now dubbed the iPod Classic. Even slimmer than before with a new all-metal design. 80GB and 160GB (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) The 160GB will still be thinner than the old 80GB, but thicker than the new 80GB. Same enhanced UI as the new nanos. 80GB has 30 hours of audio play, 5 hours of video play, 160 has 40 hours of audio play, 7 hours of video play. $249 for the 80GB and $349 for the 160GB, available today! Nice price points.
  • NEW iPod–The iPod TOUCH! This is what I have been waiting for!! It’s essentially an iPhone without the phone part, including the multi-touch, the interaction with the screen, cover flow, video, etc. It’s only 8mm thin with the same screen size as the iPhone. AND IT HAS WI-FI! OMGWTFBBQ. It has Safari, just like the iPhone. HOT HOT HOT. (And if they don’t tell us the pricing/capacity soon I’m going to cut someone.) It also has YouTube, but I wasn’t that impressed by it on the iPhone…I bet it’s way better on the Wi-Fi, as I’ve only seen it on AT&T’s crappy EDGE network. Access all the iPhone-enabled sites with the browser. Battery life: 22 hours audio, 5 hours video. And, the bad news…8GB for $299 and 16GB for $399, in stores later this month. I’m pretty bummed now. I really wanted this interface with the iPod Classic storage capacity.

- ONE MORE THING: The iTunes Wi-Fi Store on the iPod Touch. Fully-featured just like iTunes. You can buy complete albums, with album art and everything. It’s also coming to the iPhone, along with a partnership with Starbucks. When you have Wi-Fi on and get near a Starbucks, you can easily buy the music playing and see the last 10 songs in their playlist to buy those too. That’s kind of awesome, because Starbucks usually plays good music. Users will get free access to the iTunes Store while in Starbucks. Thanks, corporate giants!

- ONE OTHER THING: They’re dropping the iPhone prices to $399 for the 8GB and getting rid of the 4GB iPhone. I might be tempted if they were totally unlockable.

I’m really torn. REALLY torn. I wanted the iPod Touch interface in the worst way, but it doesn’t have the capacity I want. To me, the iPhone interface and Wi-Fi are not worth the cost increase and the lack of storage. I’m not planning on paying $400 for a new iPod. If I was going to go down to 8GB, I would get the new iPod nano, because it’s HOT and $200 is a great price point. However, it’s only 4GB bigger than my current 1st generation iPod nano.

I think I will end up with the new iPod Classic. I’m a bit disappointed that the Classic is not offered in any of the metal colors of the nano, only black & silver. BUT that’s not a dealbreaker. Honestly? I really want the new nano AND the Classic. I know, I’m a sick, sick fangirl. I guess it’s off to the Apple Store to drool and dream!

monday morning mix: overrated but that’s ok

Shawn and I had a conversation on Friday about how Modest Mouse is overrated–still better than half the crap on MTV, and not BAD, but overrated just the same.  So, of course my iPod would bust out with a Modest Mouse song.  I had hoped the new album would be back up to The Moon & Antarctica levels, but I was sad to find it wasn’t true.  I keep it on the iPod hoping it will grow on me.  No luck so far.  Perhaps it’s time to make some room.

The New Pornographers - All The Old Showstoppers
Modest Mouse - Florida
Spoon - Eddie’s Ragga
Tapes ‘n Tapes - Cowbell
Rilo Kiley - Silver Lining
Tegan & Sara - Are You Ten Years Ago
Ben Gibbard/Ben Barnett - Joga (Bjork cover)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones

Hope you all had a good weekend!
