monday morning mix: too many overtimes

I was up until almost 2 in the morning last night watching my beloved Dallas Stars take out the San Jose Sharks in an amazing Game 6 in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. It was a game full of hard checks and crazy awesome goaltending, and I knew I couldn’t go to bed without waiting until the bitter end. Thankfully, my boys pulled through and Brenden Morrow scored the game winning goal around 1:30 AM. Needless to say, I had trouble getting up this morning and needed a little help from my trusty iPod to wake up.

I think the iPod was feeling feminine this morning, because it spit out a LOT of female artists for my listening pleasure today:

  1. Over the Rhine - How Long Have You Been Stoned
  2. Marissa Nadler - Dying Breed
  3. Antony and the Johnsons - You Are My Sister
  4. Rilo Kiley - Give A Little Love
  5. A Fine Frenzy - Think of You
  6. Stars - Today Will Be Better, I Swear!
  7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Date With the Night
  8. Andrew Bird - Simple X

I was sad to see this weekend come to a close…we had a BIG ol’ Saturday. Mine started with sleeping very late and then going to meet my good friend Kyle up at CAPE. I got to catch up with my old friend Mandy and finally meet her talented boyfriend, David Mack. I also had the pleasure of meeting the people behind one of my favorite web comics, Two Lumps, and the man behind Starslip Crisis, which has been on my to-read list of web comics for a while now. The most awesome part of CAPE was meeting Mercedes Lackey and her husband Larry Dixon. Mercedes was kind enough to sign one of her novels that I had brought along with me, and we spent a few minutes having a very pleasant chat. I was trying very hard not to be a fangirl, though I think I failed completely. I have loved her books for a long time, and it is always amazing to meet an author you admire.

We started off Saturday night at the 21st birthday party of the wonderful William, graciously hosted by Cali and Neal from geekbrief.tv. I got to meet a lot of absolutely fabulous new Twitter friends, had great strawberry daquiris and Kathleen’s AMAZING spinach and bacon deviled eggs, got interviewed on The Neal Show, and enjoyed some sweet Mario Kart Wii action. Time absolutely flew, and before we knew it, it was time to leave for our second party to celebrate the birth of our awesome friend Dinah. From there, I ended up going dancing with some friends on Cedar Springs, and made it home about 2 AM. I haven’t partied that much since in one night in a very, very long time. It may take me until next week to recover!

Nerd idol ahoy - Mercedes Lackey coming to CAPE 2008!

Cape DayI’ve always been a fan of the fantasy genre, especially if it involves magic. One summer when I was about 14 or 15, I came across an interesting looking book in the library, Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey. It centered around a girl named Talia who was about to become an integral part of a kingdom of magic and political intrigue. I picked it up and put it in my growing stack of books to check out, but not before discovering that it was part of a trilogy. So, I grabbed the other two books (Arrow’s Flight and Arrow’s Fall) and settled in for a long afternoon of reading to escape the Texas heat.

It was love at first read. Lackey’s books are not Pulitzer Prize winning novels, but they are well-crafted and written with obvious care. Her characters are people that I grew to care about, and I followed their adventures with bated breath. Lackey drew me in with that series, and from then on I was hooked.

Lackey would not disappoint me from there–I was absolutely thrilled to discover that while the Arrows trilogy had come to an end, the universe of Valdemar they created had not. She had written many other books in the same world, and I could not check them out fast enough. I’ve been a fan ever since. Recently I was able to pick up probably 15 of her books in hardcover at a library book sale, and then today I found out something truly special.

Zeus ComicsMercedes Lackey will be appearing at Zeus Comics‘ annual CAPE Comic Book and Pop Culture Expo on May 3. CAPE is something that I really enjoy going to for a few reasons. First, I adore Zeus Comics and enjoy supporting their ventures. Richard, the owner, is a great guy, and everyone who works there is always nice and helpful. Second, I always run into someone I know at CAPE. Usually it’s a friend or two with the same geeky interests as I am. Sometimes it’s one of the guests–last year I was incredibly happy to run into my high school friend Mandy, who just happens to be the girlfriend of David Mack [creator of Kabuki] and totally awesome in her own right! Now, I’m super excited about this year’s CAPE because I get to have something of MINE signed for a change, instead of just waiting in line while Shawn gets an issue or two signed by a writer or artist.

If you are in the Dallas area and love comics, do yourself a favor and visit Zeus Comics for CAPE on May 3–and don’t forget, that’s also Free Comic Book Day!

oh, that’s the sound she makes when she’s speechless with geeker joy

The world will stand still on Friday night at midnight for many obsessed fans of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. I know that YayCoffee, La Nikki and I are fairly combusting from sheer joy at the thought of finally cracking open our copies of The Half-Blood Prince. I know that not all of you understand the whole Harry Potter nerd factor, and that’s OK. But the real world will cease to exist to me while I wrap myself up in the comfortable blanket of Wizarding England and find out if Harry’s going to spank his inner moppet and get over the raging Joan Collins teenage ‘tude he had going on for most of Book 5.

a thousand paper cranes

When I was in the 5th grade, I read the book Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes, by Eleanor Coerr. The book is the story of a Japanese girl living in Hiroshima who falls sick with leukemia, the “atom bomb disease.” She recalls a legend that says if a sick person folds one thousand paper origami cranes, the gods will grant that person’s wish and make them healthy again. This book touched me so much, and I was only 12. I remember how hard I cried–harder, I think, than I’d ever cried over a book–and how much it inspired me to study more history and learn about the Holocaust. Sadako’s brave struggle with her illness inspired her classmates, and after her death they campaigned to build the Children’s Peace Statue in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in honor of Sadako and the other children who were victims of the Hiroshima bombing.

I’ve had a soft spot for origami ever since. I remember after I read the book and started doing the project I was assigned to do, I decided that for the required artistic part of the project I would fold 1000 cranes, too. I had a crush on a boy named Phillip, who apparently returned said crush because he helped me fold cranes during any free time we had–reading hour, recess, after school. He moved away that summer and I never saw him again, but he was the last boy to be truly nice to me between 5th and 7th grade.

When we went to the Dallas City Arts Fest a few weekends ago, I was walking through the Trammell Crow Asian Art Museum when my breath caught. There was a long glassed-in hallway that led from one room of the exhibit to another, and hanging in the spill of sunlight were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of paper cranes in all colors and sizes. It made me think immediately of Sadako and the legend of the paper cranes. I was very glad I had my camera.

Pamela Anderson isn’t the only one who is “stacked”

I love books. I could easily spend hours (and my life savings) in a bookstore. I love the way they smell. I love the way they feel in my hands. I love the way the colorful spines decorate my shelves. I love how official my desk looks, with all the manuals and guides stacked up and ready to use. I love finding brand-new books for a dollar at book sales or used bookstores. I love finding books I’ve been looking for on the clearance shelf at Half-Price Books. I love making lists of books I want to read. I love having e-books on my Pocket PC and knowing that no matter where I get stuck, I will never be bored.

I love books.

I went to Barnes and Noble and Half-Price Books last night so I could pick up a few things. I made myself go home when I caught myself wandering happily through Half-Price and making lists of books I want to buy. Bad, bad bookworm! I am teetering precariously close to more books than bookshelves.

I love books.

A whole lot of stuff about nothing

I had planned on blogging yesterday, but I was too busy getting worked up reading MOL Junior and going into a redhead temper over chauvanistic comments and uninformed hatred of Radiohead and electronically-created music. You know you wish you’d been there, too. I pretty much owe most of the MOL Nation a big ol’ asskicking now. Any takers to be first in line?

So what have I been doing lately? Not a whole hell of a lot. Reading, listening to music, watching TV, hanging out, doing Internet stuff. My life is exciting! I’m not so creative today, y’all, sorry about that.

READING:
Getting Things Done, by David Allen
The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger

LISTENING:
Extraordinary Machine, by Fiona Apple (the album that Sony refuses to release, that has been leaked all over the Internet, that I downloaded with no shame, because I would buy it IF THEY MADE IT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. Corporate stiff idiots.)
Picaresque, by The Decemberists
I’m a Bird Now, by Antony and the Johnsons
Frances the Mute, by The Mars Volta
Three, by Archer Prewitt

WATCHING:
Gilmore Girls Season One (I need to finish that so I can get new Netflix)
Home Movies on Adult Swim OnDemand (I love digital cable)
Spirited Away, one of the best animated films I can remember seeing
The Ashlee Simpson Show, because it’s like a train wreck in a lava lamp
Alias, because I have an unfortunate crush on SpyDaddy

SURFING:
43 Folders, which is an absolutely fascinating blog related to the Getting Things Done process of organization, with a Mac-centric focus. So cool. They have a really interesting Google Group too. This stuff really helps you develop a great way of organizing yourself and being more productive.
LifeHacker, which will be your new favorite site.
Go Fug Yourself, Conversations With Famous People, and Stereogum (also an mp3 blog), because I can’t get enough of faux Britney/K-Fed conversations, or snarky celebrity fashion commentary.
MobileRead Networks, a really great site about mobile computing, ebooks, portable news, and loads of other techie tidbits. I am an editor for MobileRead!

It’s twelve o’clock…or does that mean Harry is in mortal peril?

Apparently Microsoft UK is taking J.K. Rowling’s Potter-verse to heart, and creating a GPS “clock” that lets you know where family members are at all times.

“We were inspired by J.K. Rowling’s take on [family tracking] in the form of the Weasley’s family clock with different hands corresponding to the whereabouts of different members of the Weasley family,” Microsoft spokeswoman Julie Woodbury said.

She said the design is still in the conceptualization phase.

I mean, if it actually said things like, “home,” “traveling,” “Hogwarts,” and “mortal peril” I would buy it. Or if it was like, “at Tiffany’s buying your Christmas gift” or “secretly having an affair with a superhero”, I would also buy it for the sheer convenience of it all. But somehow, I don’t think this will take either of those idea pools into suggestion. It IS Microsoft, after all. Maybe they just want to keep track of the globe-trotting Mr. Gates? Or perhaps they are wanting to use it to spy on the genius of Steve Jobs at Apple…very tricksy!

The booty ye deserve! (this is not what you think it is, I promise)

Have you been attacked by ninjas? Do you want compensation for the time you’ve missed from work, damages from an ill-timed ninja fight, or do you regret signing the pre-nup when you married that mysterious man in black?

Look no further…there’s a pirate captain that wants to help you. I’d hire this guy over Jim Adler, the “tough, smart Texas hammer” any day!

I bet there have been a lot of ninja attacks after this totally sweet book hit the shelves. I got the last copy of this fine piece of best-selling literature for Potential Lunch Winner for a Valentine’s Day gift, because nothing says “I love you forever” like ninjas.

Now go get ye the booty ye deserve. And by booty I mean…books about ninjas.

The Veritas is revealed…

In the Harry Potter fandom, much talk is often devoted to the “lost Weasley.” My HP-devoted friends and I (all like, three of them, y’all), are often wondering WTF people are talking about. The Weasleys are a big family, but I don’t think they lost anybody in the Burrow. Don’t you think that if there was a missing Weasley, JK Rowling would have talked about him/her by now?

Well, I hate to break it to all the non-believers, but there IS a lost Weasley out there…

And Cynthia Nixon is dating…her. (thanks to pagesixsixsix for the handy photo)
