The Old 97’s

The Old 97’s

This was a genius concert…lots of fun. I’m impressed that I got such a good shot with my 640×480 camera phone. The best parts of the night were rolling around town in Dale’s minivan and hearing some random guy announce to Ronnie that he (the random guy, not Ronnie) farted.

happy holidays

I think that a few things must have passed under Santa’s radar this year, because I was fairly spoiled this Christmas. My parents got me a much-needed printer/scanner/copier, along with quite a few other smaller items (including an IKEA gift card, which I spent yesterday and then some!). Shawn’s mom got me the Astaire & Rogers DVD collection, Volume 1, which I cannot wait to watch. Shawn got me an awesome Nintendo DS, packaged with MarioKart DS. But by far, my favorite present was this…

Definitely because it’s beautiful and perfect, but most of all for the meaning behind it.

ryan adams is more productive than me

He’s released like, seventeen albums this year. Okay, so actually he’s only released three: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights (as Ryan Adams & The Cardinals), and now 29. But you have to admit, three albums in one year is a LOT for just one artist, even someone as pretentious, high, and drunk as Ryan Adams. And damn him to hell and back, I like them all. He’s forcing me to support his drug habits and I’m not very happy about it, but I can’t deny the greatness of his work. I guess he’s gotta stay depressed somehow, and illegal substances will certainly help him produce more gorgeous, angst-fueled albums in 2006.

I have given 29 a first listen today, and it’s gorgeous. “Starlite Diner”, “The Sadness” and “Carolina Rain” are the standout tracks to me so far, though I usually change my mind by at least one track upon the second listen. Many of the arrangements are sparse and haunting, which only lend added beauty to Ryan’s voice. I highly recommend sticking it in any music lover’s Christmas stocking, especially if his name is Ronnie Fauss.

merry christmas to me!

I got the best surprise today when I discovered that Rhapsody gave me an early Christmas present. Mac and Linux users can now use Rhapsody through www.rhapsody.com, which allows you to install a browser plug-in that is a streamlined version of the standalone jukebox. (I installed it on my Firefox browser at work on my PC, as well.) It actually works better than the jukebox, IMHO, because it’s not so resource-hoggy. The only feature I ever use that is missing is the Library feature, which is essentially a list of albums bookmarked that you like for easy access in the future. But that’s cool…now albums have an actual web address that I can bookmark in my browser.

I was going to cancel my Rhapsody subscription because I was paying $10 a month to only use it at work. I was letting my best friend use it, but when trying to save money, things you don’t really use are the first to go. Now I don’t have to cancel! I am so so excited, because Rhapsody was one of the few things that kept me from 100% deciding on an iBook versus a PC laptop. Now it’s iBook all the way, baby! And I believe a Mac mini or iMac will follow to replace Ginger…I can’t wait!

If you’re interested in Rhapsody, go to www.rhapsody.com and sign up. I hate Real Networks (on principle) but I have LOVED Rhapsody for almost two years now. I can’t help it, it RULES!

We went looking at Christmas lights with these sweet refractive glasses Nathan bought on eBay, and much mayhem and picture taking ensued!

I went out to pick a fight in Canada

Whenever I hear the song Neighborhood #3 (Power’s Out) by The Arcade Fire, I think of my friend The Coolest Christian Ever, who once called me to determine if the lyrics to part of the chorus were…

I went out into the night
I went out to pick a fight in Canada

Sadly, they were not. But they should be. Because really, who DOESN’T want to pick a fight in Canada? I certainly do.

’tis the season…to be a consumer whore

The people from Get a FREE Mac Mini! emailed me to remind me that I only need TWO referrals to get my Mac Mini, which I had completely forgotten about. So if there are two kind souls that didn’t already sign up for me awhile back, I would appreciate it. :)
Click here to complete an offer and make me a very happy girl!

I suggest the Rhapsody trial in case any of you were wanting to sign up for the service anyway…I use it and it’s awesome!

love…probably?

So I am probably one of three people on the planet who have not seen Love Actually. Yes, I just heard the chorus of horrified gasps that went up among the members of MOL Nation. No, I don’t hate puppies, Christmas, or being in love. I just have managed to only see about 5 minutes of the movie, mostly involving Colin Firth (mmmm) getting stuck on stage kissing some girl at a Christmas pageant. This is not for lack of trying…I just keep forgetting that I need to rent it or Netflix it because I am crap at writing things like that down.

I am a psychotic list maker, but one of the things I always forget to do is make lists of albums, books and movies that I want to purchase/read/listen to/see. One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2006 is to remember to actually DO that so that maybe I don’t draw a huge blank when I’m in the bookstore, CD shop, or at Premiere Video. I am convinced that if I manage to do this, my quality of life will improve because I will constantly be immersed in stuff that I am enjoying.

So, because I love Christmas and I am a sucker for romcom, I will be renting Love Actually this week. I can’t come to the Journey Movie Group showing on Saturday because Shawn and I have our first of four family Christmas celebrations to attend. But don’t worry…soon there will only be two people on Earth who haven’t seen it. And I will pity them, just like you probably do.

i still haven’t got my pony

Kerri’s sick of my last post, so this is for her. I really have nothing of value to say at the moment.

Despite years of asking Santa, I am about to have my 25th pony-less Christmas, unless Shawn manages to come through last minute. Perhaps when we are at Northpark tonight I can sit on Santa’s knee and ask for one. Though, I have to admit, I’m getting something better than a pony this year. And my iPod was definitely better than a pony last year, too.

I love Christmas time, but I hate stress that inevitably accompanies Christmas time because everyone is trying to get stuff accomplished before they get to take off more days of work than I do. Seriously, our some clients are going to be out like, from now until January. Shawn got to take an entire week off. I’m JEALOUS. I get two days off and I plan on hoarding them like precious jewels. Huzzah for 4 day weekends.

I haven’t been feeling well and I’ve been working late, so I’ve been coming home and messing with my computer. Now my Mac is all pimped out and pretty, and I set up a domain on it so I can access it from any computer no matter how many times my IP address changes. Thus is the excitement of my life.

I can’t wait for Christmas.
