This could be the best mashup EVAR. Ghostbusters Theme vs. NIN…even if you don’t like one of those things, check it out because according to my friend B, who gave me the link, “IT RULZ!” He’s right, it does.

I love books. I could easily spend hours (and my life savings) in a bookstore. I love the way they smell. I love the way they feel in my hands. I love the way the colorful spines decorate my shelves. I love how official my desk looks, with all the manuals and guides stacked up and ready to use. I love finding brand-new books for a dollar at book sales or used bookstores. I love finding books I’ve been looking for on the clearance shelf at Half-Price Books. I love making lists of books I want to read. I love having e-books on my Pocket PC and knowing that no matter where I get stuck, I will never be bored.
I love books.
I went to Barnes and Noble and Half-Price Books last night so I could pick up a few things. I made myself go home when I caught myself wandering happily through Half-Price and making lists of books I want to buy. Bad, bad bookworm! I am teetering precariously close to more books than bookshelves.
I love books.

I just want to take a moment to pimp Deadman, a completely fabulous Texas band fronted by two awesome people who I am glad to call friends. They are gearing up for some big things, including performances on KEXP and KCRW in the coming month. Their new EP, In the Heart of Mankind, is set to be released on May 10th, but you can purchase it now on iTunes. If you want some good music, go to iTunes, spend $5 and enjoy.

Look, I could even take it traveling with me!

It never fails…every Saturday after the bars close at 2 AM, I can hear the Dallas Police helicopter doing a low sweep, looking for some drunk idiot.
I noticed it a lot when I first moved in here. It made me nervous. It made me think that I lived in an unsafe neighborhood (which is both true and not true). Now I hardly notice it at all. For all my night owl tendencies, I haven’t been staying up late like I usually do on the weekends. But, here I sit tonight, fresh from dancing and a trip to Denny’s, and the trusty DPD helicopter is making the usual Saturday night fly-over. Hope they catch the drunk idiot.
Nice to know some things never change.

It has finally occurred to me that I need to stop writing for free.
No, seriously. I keep doing favors for friends in vain attempts to pretty up my portfolio, and I’m just not going to get anywhere unless I stop being nice and desperate. I need to start playing this game for real if I’m going to get anywhere with it. I need to start playing hardball and not acting desperate even though I’m both desperate for clips and some phat extra cash.
I am tired of where I am in my life. I am tired of playing the corporate waiting game since policy dictates I must wait six months before churning out brilliant copy instead of brilliant shipping labels. I am tired of watching my ill-used degree collect dust on my wall…wait, scratch that, on the chair by the wall it used to hang on until it fell off. It fell off and nearly broke some weeks back, and I thought to myself, “How ironic.” Except it doesn’t have to be, does it? Does anyone use their college degree anymore, or do we all get screwed out of it somehow? Maybe I’m clinging to a piece of paper in vain, or maybe I am wanting to get back to the place I was in when I decided that was what I wanted to do with my life.
I don’t want to have some urban hipster quarter-life crisis. I have to break out of this status quo. I have to open some kind of door to what I want to do. I used to be really good at that, and I need to recapture it.

(taken from genslay…but also on my mind the past couple days)
Now these are by no means the only CDs I owned or listened to growing up…nor do they necessarily represent my favorite artists…but these were the ones that ALWAYS stayed in rotation on my stereo, no matter what. The old favorites, if you will, that I’d pull out when I was feeling bad, wanting something to make me happy, needing background music I’d enjoy, etc. etc.
1. Tori Amos - Boys for Pele
2. Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
3. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
4. Tori Amos - From the Choirgirl Hotel
5. Lisa Loeb - Tails
6. Bjork - Post
7. Counting Crows - August and Everything After
8. Bjork - Homogenic
9. Pixies - Death to the Pixies (whoever stole this needs to give it back)
10. Luscious Jackson - Natural Ingredients
11. Liz Phair - Whip-Smart
12. Frente - Marvin the Album
13. Depeche Mode - Violator (I know, obvious)
14. Fiona Apple - Tidal
15. Belly - Star
Wow, I was really into the ovary rock. But I still listen to, well, to 100% of the stuff on that list.
Honorable Mentions: RENT Original Broadway Cast soundtrack, Jewel - Pieces of You, Cranberries - Everybody’s Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, Tori Amos - Under the Pink, Sheryl Crow - Tuesday Night Music Club, No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom, Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

I saw Tori Amos last night, which is always a joy. This is show #8 for me in 13 years of listening to Tori. She was my first true musical artist “obsession” way back in the day. I started listening to her when I was in junior high and quickly became obsessed. My friend Elizabeth gave me a tape with Little Earthquakes on Side A, and Under the Pink on Side B, along with various B-sides. I found that tape not too long ago and was shocked that it actually still played–I was certain that I had worn it out.
The concert was a great mix of old and new, along with a great cover of Personal Jesus AND By My Side from Godspell. (I am a musical theater NERD.) She played a moving version of Winter, which is one of my top three Tori songs. She did an improv in the middle of the song referencing her brother, who died this past year…very touching. She also played my favorite off the new album, Sweet the Sting…very bluesy. I love it. I even got to hear some great b-sides…she played Take to the Sky, which I can’t recall hearing live (edit: I knew there was a reason I couldn’t definitively say I hadn’t heard it live, because she played it during Strange Little Tour), as well as Here In My Head, which is a personal favorite.
The opening act was a kid named Matt Nathanson. He was good, but I was seriously getting antsy because he was playing his guitar WAY too hard. It really took away from my enjoyment of his performance. That might sound nitpicky, but it was the truth. You just don’t play acoustic guitars like that. It was no wonder that his guitar went out of tune during every song. I thought he was quite generic, but talented. He was very John Mayer-ish to me. Definitely no Howie Day.
It was really nice to go to the concert with actual Tori fans. I don’t feel guilty about totally zoning out and ignoring the people I’m with if they’re fans. I know Tori is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea, which was made annoyingly apparent by the people sitting next to us who talked through the WHOLE DAMN CONCERT. I swear, the rudeness of people never fails to amaze me. But I was pretty into the performance, because I did not notice the talking until it had been going on for a while. That is a first, because talkers are my pet peeves and I usually notice them right away. My poor friend Dinah has the worst luck at this venue–she always gets stuck next to the idiots/talkers/smokers/rude people.
Now it is Monday again and I really still wish it was the weekend. This is going to be a busy week…I am singing at the Meyerson Symphony Center on Thursday so I have a week full of rehearsals. It makes me tired just thinking about it.
